Stand Up!
What is this thing called Legacy? The seven jewels left a legacy for us to carry on…what will we do to better our community? Do our actions aid down trodden humanity in its efforts to achieve higher social, economic and intellectual status?
There is much OUR community needs – no there is much OUR community requires; but are we listening, watching, and understanding? When we ride past Poplar Grove and North Av do WE actually look at our fellow man? When we ride past dilapidated homes on Garrison Av, Park Heights Av, or Reisterstown Rd, do we think of what WE can do to encourage affordable housing to the community? When we ride past the corner stores – you know the “urban fast food centers and grocery stores” where those who can’t afford it pay a premium for the basics – do WE brainstorm on what can be done to encourage others to take the step of venturing into retail efforts and subsequently give back to the community?
Or do we keep looking forward waiting for the change of the traffic light? Or do we revel in the visions of “Home sweet home? ” Or do we ponder over what to do with our next financial intake? Brothers, now’s the time…
Its NOW time to stand up and become more of a credit to our community; it’s now time to do more to uplift the lives of youth; it’s now time to give a helpful word to our neighbor; it’s now time to step out of the comfort zone of our box, roll the sleeves up and “get in where we fit in. ”
How do we do so? Simple. Donate at least 4 of the approximately 720 hours a month, we’re blessed with, to do one of the following:
Serve on a chapter committee or leadership position
Volunteer to become a Big for Big Brothers / Big Sisters
Volunteer as a leader for a local Boy Scout troop
Volunteer at a homeless shelter or food kitchen
Volunteer to read to elementary school students
Volunteer to research potential funding sources for chapter and Foundation efforts
Volunteer to clean, fix or build out areas of the Delta Lambda Foundation Outreach Center
Remember, “Life is just a minute, only sixty seconds in it, forced upon you, can’t refuse it. Didn’t seek it, didn’t choose it. But it’s up to you to use it. You must suffer if you lose it; give an account if you abuse it. Just a tiny little minute, but eternity is in it. ” Brothers, we look forward to your continued enthusiastic participation as Delta Lambda – the 25th House of Alpha – marches towards its 90th anniversary!
And that we humbly submit to our God that the
“…true spirit of fraternity, rule our hearts, guide our thoughts and control our lives so that we may become through Thee, Servants of All.”
